“Hisayuki Idekoba, the CEO of Recruit Holdings Co, the Japanese owner of Glassdoor and Indeed, told Bloomberg that despite struggling to find staff, many small and medium (sized) businesses were still trying to recruit workers the way they did a decade ago — by asking them to submit resumes. He said the labor shortage was a chance to move away from a "resume-profile culture." Resumes could be replaced with questions and assessments to see how a job seeker would handle specific tasks required by the role, he said.”
At Plotkin Group we agree with this strategy for some industries and positions. We also believe resumes provide value for the other positions but, they should carry less weight than many ... FULL ARTICLE >
Governors in 26 states have already eliminated the federal $300 unemployment benefit. For the other 24 states, roughly 10 million people who rely on jobless benefits will lose them on September 6th if Congress allows the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation program to expire.
Jobless claims fell to a new pandemic low last week, suggesting the labor market continues to heal even as the Delta variant causes uncertainty. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and Labor Secretary Marty Walsh said that while the extra weekly payments should expire next month, states that want to con... FULL ARTICLE >
Recently I read an article in Barron’s (May 31, 2021) titled ‘Adding Discipline to Decisions’, an interview with Daniel Kahneman who also wrote a book called ‘Noise: A Flaw in Human Judgment’. Kahneman, who won a Nobel Prize in Economics in 2002, changed our understanding of how people think about money and make financial decisions. He and his research partner rejected the notion of the “rational actor” and instead mapped the myriad of errors people make due to predictable biases and behavioral tendencies. In my view the same could be said for hiring managers, recruiters interviewers and all of your employ... FULL ARTICLE >
In short, haste makes waste. Companies are facing hiring hurdles in 2021. Some companies are not getting enough candidates to apply while others are not getting enough qualified candidates to apply.
On Wednesday, April 28th, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said that an apparent hiring bottleneck in the labor market has made it difficult for employers to hire workers despite a persistently high jobless rate. He predicts that this will likely end in the coming months. Powell mentioned several reasons for the labor market shortage, even though the unemployment rate is down to 6% and some 9.7 million Americans say they are actively looking for work according to the Labor Department’s February jobs report. As some of you battle with these challeng...

Kane Brown wrote a song called What Ifs? Take a break and listen to his song here.
What if you tried something for the first time and it worked out? We all have, this happens all the time in life.
What if you never applied for the job you are in now because you were afraid to fail? What if you never tried your favorite restaurant? You would have missed out.
For those of you that have never used an assessment to help you during the selection process or with managing and developing employees, what if you used the right assessment and it helped you? You might have less stress during the day and sleep better at night. Your team or company might be the best in the area, your industry, the US or the World.
For those of you that... FULL ARTICLE >
Using Employee Assessments for selection, for managing employees and for development is a win-win for the company, managers, candidates and the employees. We would like to start your year off with some important topics that are not discussed enough. One, the benefits for the applicant or employee of being assessed and hired for a position that is a good fit. Two, helping managers become better managers by using assessment results with their direct reports.
Applicants may not think that we are on their side, we are. One of our main jobs is helping our clients hire the right person for the job. What does this mean? For our job fit assessments, it means the candidates’ scores fit most of the ranges and measures deemed to be successful in the job. When the new ... FULL ARTICLE >
A Year for the History Books – For Good or Bad, 2020 will be a Year to Remember
Aside from having one of the most challenging and strange years faced by most of us, attracting quality candidates, hiring the right person for the right job along with managing and developing employees are still one of the biggest challenges of running a successful department, location, business or organization.
These areas are relative. Some of you are constantly looking for an edge and to improve, some of you are happy with your current status and may be blind to your weak spots while others do not place any of these areas as important enough to consider seeking improvements. We are in business to help those of you who are looking to improve or open to it for any of these areas mentioned.

Hiring a salesperson or a manager that meets or exceeds your expectations is one of the more challenging and important hires that many of you face. Employees don’t quit jobs, they quit bosses. And companies do not prosper when sales are lacking. Anything that will increase your odds of making a more informed decision for these positions and any other position is worth consideration. If Vegas had odds on this trait against success or failure, I could have retired years ago to my own island that doesn’t have Covid19. For either of these positions, a good resume and years of experience are not going to guarantee a successful hire. There are thousands of candidates per day with both of these qualities that are bottom performers applying f...

“We knew that our employees would be the key to our success, and we knew what we had to do philosophically, we just weren’t sure how to get there. And that’s where we were fortunate enough to find Jim’s group to help us. Plotkin helped us develop a tremendous culture of excellence in our organization. We had 3,500 employees, and we were able to reach every employee, top to bottom, and they all had a pride in the organization that we were able to instill in them with many of the programs that we worked with Plotkin on. As a result, all our business results were outstanding – profitability, awards and recognition, and brand building.” “Turnover at our organization averages 65%, and 1/3 of our hires leave within their first 90 days. In 2014, after piloting the Stanton Survey for 9 months, we operationalized it across our company. The data we gathered during this period showed significantly lower turnover of new hires — approximately 17% at both the 6 and 9 month post-hire dates, respectively, within the pilot period. Improving our turnover rates was the reason we started using the Stanton Survey, but the byproduct is a better hire. The downstream effects of a good hiring decision are irrefutable and can last for years. Better people hire better people.” "The value of The Plotkin Group assessments has been twofold," explains Recruiter customer Dick Kopplin. "First, the testing process gives us increased credibility with our clients, and the assurance that we are evaluating candidates not only through our own process, but by using impartial experts. In addition, the testing often indicates that we should do some additional checking on candidates who have not tested well in certain areas. We would highly recommend the services provided by The Plotkin Group." "The Stanton Survey helped us reduce workers comp by 75%!” Please contact us with questions regarding finding the right solution for your company. |
